Photo #2 – Geothermal Plant

Geothermal Plant - 1/60th - f/5.6 - ISO 200 - 145mm

While racing to get to the Salton Sea we were running out of time when we noticed this geothermal power plant on the very north end of the Salton Sink area. With the Sun not quite up yet the sky was just filled with vibrant colors. The silhouette of facility played well against the background and the lights inside the facility added some detail that helps round out the image.

The shot was taken from a freeway overpass to avoid some power lines that were right in front of us. Chris grabbed the shot at ISO 200, 1/60th of a second, and f/5.6 using a 70-200mm lens dialed to about 145mm. The key to a good silhouette is to exposure for the background. With no light hitting the camera side of the building, it easily fell to complete black (with the exception of the windows and lights). With the building off-center to the left and the steam off-center to the right a good compositional balance was found.
